Bill to help veterans families with property taxes moves forward

SPRINGFIELD – An Illinois Senate Bill to help families of veterans with property taxes after the death of the veteran has moved forward through the state legislature. Gibson City Republican Tom Bennett sponsored the bill. Currently, a disabled veteran can apply for reduced or be entirely exempt from property taxes on their home, however, if a veteran with a spouse dies while their veteran’s homestead exemption is under review, the exception will not be granted. Senate Bill 1534 seeks to address that, granting the exemption to the surviving spouse. The Illinois Senate passed the bill March 24th and it now awaits action in the House.

“This is about supporting our veterans who keep us safe through their service, as well as recognizing the sacrifices their families have made to support them,” said Bennett. “We want to make sure that the families of veterans receive the benefits that are rightfully owed to them.”
