Apollo the eagle soars to new accomplishments at the Illinois Raptor Center

By: R.A. Killmer

DECATUR – Apollo, the Starved Rock eagle that was taken in by the Illinois Raptor Center is making leaps and bounds at his new home. In just two weeks, the young eagle is showing signs of comfortability in his new surroundings like no other bald eagle has at the facility. Program Director Jacques Nuzzo says Apollo is already comfortable jumping up to his fist, a maneuver necessary for educational birds.

Nuzzo says some next steps for the 2-year-old bald eagle are reinforcing maneuvers, crate training, outdoors training, and getting acquainted with the equipment. Nuzzo is hopeful that by the end of the summer, Apollo will be a permanent program bird. Apollo was rescued by conservation police nearly three weeks ago after sustaining injuries at Starved Rock State Park.
