SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois State Police and a number of railroad organization have announced that it is Rail Safety Week across the state. Coordinated by Amtrak and Operation Lifesaver, the aim is to prevent the more than 2,100 injuries and deaths that occur in and around railways. Because of the ongoing pandemic, law enforcement agencies will be participating in a virtual Operation Clear Track event this year.
“Tragedies involving train collisions with pedestrians and vehicles are preventable,” stated District 17 Interim Commander Lieutenant Dyan Talbot. “As you approach a railroad crossing, take a moment to look both ways and listen for a train before crossing the tracks; the brief moment may save your life,” added Lieutenant Talbot.
